“Benefit of the Doubt” is a love story of Arthur Cooper, an entrepreneurial, black guy and CC Whitehead, a progressive, young, white girl. This hip, young couple meet her parents for the first time at a fancy New York restaurant. Donald, her rich, conservative, “Big Daddy”, has plans for his daughter. He is the epitome of white privilege and he wants to bring his baby girl back home to the country club life of Charlotte, NC. But Arthur sees through the Donald’s scheme and pushes back. Not used to being challenged so directly, Donald loses his temper. Things escalate. Tensions rise. They get all out of control. Until the line is crossed and then we’re off…
“Benefit of the Doubt” is a play about interracial love and how parental overreach can affect that love. Or maybe even destroy the hopes and dreams of that next generation. It is a modern-day twist on that classic American movie “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” But it has today’s sensibilities.
